Hormones: Groan!

When I look at my beautiful daughter I hate that I passed on to her my hormonal imbalances!

But what she has that I didn’t have at her age is so much more understanding of it…and how to overcome and transform her health!

One way our hormones can be imbalanced is being estrogen dominant.

Estrogen dominance can be very common, and despite knowing the signs and symptoms of this condition, you should also know what to do if you are suffering from it.

đź’§The 10 most common symptoms of estrogen dominance:

Abnormal menstrual periods

Low libido

Fatigue

Bad PMS (breast tenderness/swelling, mood swings, and headaches)

Hair loss

Weight gain (especially hips and abs)

Brain fog

Trouble sleeping

Thyroid dysfunction

Sluggish metabolism

Here are the steps you should follow in order to restore the healthy hormonal balance in the body:

đź’śStep 1: Eliminate Xenoestrogens

We are constantly being exposed to various chemicals, and one of them is “xenoestrogen,” which can mimic estrogen in the body.

Therefore, in order to avoid these adverse effects, you should avoid the use of the following top offenders:

Plastic Tupperware

Plastic water bottles

BPA cans

Cosmetics, makeup, and toiletries

Tap water

Non-organic dairy, produce

Soy protein isolate

Dryer sheets

Birth control pill

đź’śStep 2: Elimination (ie: poo đź’©)

This step is essential as it will ensure the removal of estrogen, and prevent its re-entrance into the bloodstream in the case of chronic constipation.

Make sure you are having daily bowel movements, and in case you are not:

Drink 2-3L of water daily

Increase the intake of fiber-rich foods

Increase the intake of vegetables with every meal.

Yet, the liver won’t be able to fulfill its function if the body lacks important nutrients, or it is overburdened with other chemicals, accumulated due to the use of processed foods, drugs, and alcohol.

Hormone Hell

There have been times in my past where I truly believed I was living in hell with my hormones…

Heck there are times I still feel that way…lol…

I started experiencing wonky-ness with my cycles early on…..by the time I was in the military my hormones, cycles, health was so wacky I had to be on bedrest usually the first 2 days of my period.

Because the military did not like this…..well they pretty much bullied me into getting on to the pill…..even though I was morally apposed to it…..I didn’t know what else to do.  I felt stuck…..I felt conflicted.

I am so grateful that today there is such amazing info out there for young girls and women to be empowered on why the PILL is PHYSICALLY unhealthy……EMOTIONALLY unhealthy…..AND SPIRITUALLY unhealthy!

I see my beautiful daughter and see how her hormones are looking like they are similar to mine…..BUT……the difference is she has tools and support that I didn’t have.  She is able to recognize how her nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, toxic load….and so much more effects her cycles.

We as women have enough to deal with….especially if you are challenged with any body distortions and food fears…..we don’t need our hormones to add to the HELL!

Instead we want to welcome our hormones…say HELLO BEAUTIFUL YOU!

Because those hormones can actually play into the mental chatter that can contribute to the body distortions and food fears!

What is one thing you can do today to empower your hormone health….to want to say HELLO to them rather than “ah hell”…..!?

Sit with this….pray about it….journal about it…..tap about it…..then oil up!!!

Fertile Friday

At the age of 15 I started to experience severe pains in my lower abdomen for 1 -2 days about every 40-50 days.

By the time I was 20 my cycles never were consistent.  They could be 20 days but usually 38-45 days.  There were many times that they were 60-70 days.

I had/have PCOS and didn’t know it.

Over 20 years ago there wasn’t much out there on PCOS.

The answers to women were to mask the pain by being put on the pill.  But all this did was create an unnatural environment within our body.  It wasn’t working with the nature, the beauty of how we were made.  How God designed us.

I knew my body was try to tell me something but I didn’t know what.  I knew the pill was not the answer but being in the military and the severity of my cramps getting worse and worse and my need to be in bed during the first 2-4 days of my cycles, sometimes more…..well the military wasn’t going to have it.  So the pressure was put on me to be on the pill.

So with great counsel, reflection, and prayer……I gave into the pressure.

This led me on a 5 year journey of my fertility being suppressed…..ignored……disrespected……and neglected.

You see the PCOS was actually my body telling me how to heal it…..how to help it……but the pill muzzled it.

When my husband decided to convert to Catholicism the priest who was his adviser was an amazing teacher and mentor.  In the course of my husband’s learning the beauty of Catholicism this priest and I had amazing conversations about the beauty of our sexuality.

It came up about my health issues and how/why I was on the pill.  I also expressed how things were actually getting worse even with being on the pill.  Hindsight my body was try to speak out over the muzzle of the pill.

This wise amazing priest asked me if he could help me learn a way to elevate the pain without the pill would I be open to try?

I was absolutely in favor of this!

He introduced me to several different natural family planning methods.  They each tracked and monitored my fertility and hormonal health in different ways.

I had no idea that NFP was about more than just knowing when you should or shouldn’t have intercourse as a married couple.  I learned during that time how I was able to monitor my hormones to see exactly what was going on.  To understand that there is a true beautiful dance with the two main hormones of estrogen and progesterone and when they are not in harmony the whole body gets out of whack.

I also learned how certain foods trigger things like PCOS.

I learned through this process just how beautiful our fertility is…..how God designed our cycles to actually be protective and restorative for us.  As well as life giving…..not only physically but spiritually as well.

I learned that monitoring our fertility isn’t just for couples to communicate if they want to achieve or avoid a pregnancy it is also for truly monitoring our physical health……therefore it is something that all young girls should chart as soon as they start their menses.  It teaches us an appreciation for our body and how to protect it and honor it.

So the pain did become less and in the process of this my husband and I started to actively try to conceive.  When it didn’t just happen month after month…..we then knew there was more to this….

Again this is where the method we were using became the most amazing blessing……since we were using a method that was me monitoring my cervical mucus…..we were able to discover I was estrogen dominant……which allowed us to understand that I probably was also insulin resistant…..which meant my diet as well as my DNA was a factor……we were able to start connecting the dots…..there were more dots to connect that we didn’t know to connect until years later.

In the process of me falling in love with this fertility charting method system I decided to become a practitioner for a short period of time.  I was able to teach and guide other couples to learn about monitoring their cycles.  To empower them to make that conscious decision of when they are ovulating to either engage or abstain from sex depending on the place they were at in their life journey.

Fertility tracking created communication in a way that was deeper and more rewarding not only for me and my husband but for all the couples I taught.  And for all the couples who continue to learn about it.

What I learned with my PCOS is that grains, diary, and sugar are truly triggers.  Stress is a huge trigger.

With PCOS we tend to be deficient in certain essential minerals and vitamins so supplementing is a must.

I’m at a different stage now with my fertility……I had to have a hysterectomy several years back due to the discovery after another miscarriage that my PCOS wasn’t the only thing that had been causing my infertility but that I had a severely bicornate uterus.  There was also a lot of scar tissue inside and outside of my uterus due to the ruptured cysts of PCOS and scar tissue because of an emergency appendix removal when I was 15!

The doctor I had after my miscarriage was truly surprised I had even been able to carry my only daughter to full term.  Hindsight again is always so beautiful because it explained so much of why that pregnancy had so many complications.

The problem with my uterus now was that it was becoming diseased, it was doing things, and experiencing things that were not natural and causing much more havoc than my PCOS ever did.

So now I was at a dilemma of how do I monitor my hormones without a period?

So whether a woman naturally goes into menopause or has had to enter into it prematurely there are ways we can monitor.

We still do have some cervical mucus….we can monitor it……charting even how we are “feeling” can help give indicators, what we are craving……and taking our temp is super helpful…..

Ironically 20 years ago taking my temp wasn’t helpful…..but I now know why (another amazing hindsight moment)……our thyroid is also responsible for our temp……so if our thyroid is off then our temp is going to be off…..

So monitoring your fertility also helps you monitor your thyroid!!!

I saw the beauty and power in this knowledge so many years ago…..so much so that I knew when my daughter entered into menses several years back I started her charting……

I love watching her be empowered with the beauty and knowledge of understanding her body’s physical and spiritual needs.  I love how she is able to anticipate when her cycle is going to start and know how to honor it with self care and love.

I love how she recognizes the spiritual component to her fertility which deepens her love and respect for her body and the theology that it is telling us!

She has recently been showing signs that PCOS could be in her present or future……but since she is very aware of what can contribute to it and turn those genes on……she is very consciences of avoiding grains, dairy, and sugar.  She uses lots of ClaryCalm…..one of her favorite oils for her cycle time……she even combines certain oils to create a heating pad type of effect on her gut area when we can’t be at the house with a heat pad.  There are certain supplements she uses that she knows help keep her body balanced.
